These notes give a concise exposition of the theory of fields, including the Galois theory of finite and infinite extensions and the theory of transcendental extensions. They are an expansion of those handed out during a course taught to first-year graduate students. v2.01 (August 21, 1996). First version on the web. v2.02 (May 27, 1998). Fixed about 40 minor errors; 57 pages. v3.00 (April 3, 2002). Revised notes; minor additions to text; added 82 exercises with solutions, an examination, and an index; 100 pages. v3.01 (August 31, 2003). Fixed many minor errors; no change to numbering; 99 pages. v4.00 (February 19, 2005). Minor corrections and improvements; added proofs to the section on infinite Galois theory; added material to the section on transcendental extensions; 107 pages. A History of Selected Topics in Categorical Algebra I: From Galois Theory to Abstract Commutators and Internal Groupoids

This paper is a chronological survey, with no proofs, of a direction in categorical algebra, which is based on categorical Galois theory and involves generalized central extensions, commutators, and internal groupoids in Barr exact Mal’tsev and more general categories. Galois theory proposes a notion of central extension, and motivates the study of internal groupoids, which is then used as an a...

Arithmetic Teichmuller Theory

By Grothedieck's Anabelian conjectures, Galois representations landing in outer automorphism group of the algebraic fundamental group which are associated to hyperbolic smooth curves defined over number fields encode all arithmetic information of these curves. The goal of this paper is to develope and arithmetic teichmuller theory, by which we mean, introducing arithmetic objects summarizing th...

Rudimentary Galois Theory

This paper introduces basic Galois Theory, primarily over fields with characteristic 0, beginning with polynomials and fields and ultimately relating the two with the Fundamental Theorem of Galois Theory. This paper then applies Galois Theory to prove Galois’s Theorem, describing the relationship between the Galois groups of polynomials and their solvability by radicals.

Galois Categories

In abstract algebra, we considered finite Galois extensions of fields with their Galois groups. Here, we noticed a correspondence between the intermediate fields and the subgroups of the Galois group; specifically, there is an inclusion reversing bijection that takes a subgroup to its fixed field. We notice a similar relationship in topology between the fundamental group and covering spaces. Th...

Category Theory and Galois Theory

Galois theory translates questions about fields into questions about groups. The fundamental theorem of Galois theory states that there is a bijection between the intermediate fields of a field extension and the subgroups of the corresponding Galois group. After a basic introduction to category and Galois theory, this project recasts the fundamental theorem of Galois theory using categorical la...

Coding complete theories in Galois groups

James Ax showed that, in each characteristic, there is a natural bijection from the space of complete theories of pseudo-finite fields, in first order logic, to the set of conjugacy classes of procyclic subgroups of the absolute Galois group of the prime field. I show that when the set of subgroups of a profinite group is considered to have the Vietoris (a.k.a. hyperspace, finite, exponential, ...
